《Sleep to Compete: Can Good Sleep Yield Twice the Results with Half the Effort?》

In the competitive arena, athletes from various countries, including those from Hong Kong, give their all in hopes of securing a spot in the finals and achieving outstanding results at various sporting events, including winning gold medals. Throughout the continuous training and competition process, athletes deeply understand the importance of sleep quality and habits on athletic performance, as well as the effects of sleep deprivation on the body. Numerous articles, videos, and practices aimed at improving athletes' sleep quality can be found on websites established by internationally renowned athlete committees, highlighting the significance of sleep for athletes.

Different Athletes Emphasize the Importance of Sleep

Hong Kong swimmer Siobhan Haughey has stated, "I deeply realize that sleep is a great remedy for restoring energy to the body."
Swiss speed skater Livio Wenger has also shared, "Good sleep far surpasses any massage or other forms of self-care."

What Impact Does Sleep Have on Physical and Mental Health?

Adequate sleep can enhance reaction times. Taking swimming competitions, which are often decided by mere seconds, as an example, a quicker reaction at the start can be advantageous. Research indicates that when athletes sleep for 10 hours a day for 6 to 7 consecutive weeks, their reaction times at the start improve by 17%.

Sleep is crucial for everyone; it is the time when our muscles rebuild, our bodies absorb nutrients, and we recover from exercise. Studies have shown that 9 to 10 hours of continuous sleep aids in the formation of muscle memory, which is not only important for athletes but also necessary in our daily lives. Without sufficient sleep, even if we spend a lot of time training our muscle techniques, they will not solidify, making our training efforts less effective.

Sleep deprivation can negatively affect the body, including reducing muscle recovery time, increasing the risk of injury, and lowering immune system function. If athletes sleep less than 8 hours, their risk of injury is 1.7 times higher than those who get adequate sleep.

Dr. Michael Grandner, a sleep expert at the University of Arizona, points out that both sleep quality and duration can affect mental health. Individuals with insufficient or poor-quality sleep are more likely to experience psychological issues such as depression and anxiety, and they find it harder to manage stress. Research has shown that people who sleep less than 6 hours a night are 2.5 times more likely to experience psychological distress than those who sleep more than 6 hours. This psychological distress can lead to insomnia and create a vicious cycle. Good sleep quality is not only important for athletes but for everyone. Therefore, improving sleep quality aids in physical recovery and enhances overall mental and physical health; everyone needs to "sleep to compete!"
